I received a curious letter the day before yesterday from
Professor John Miller of Trinity College, Dublin who wondered if I
was the "right" John McCarthy, his wife's relative. He said that
if I were, then my father would be from County Kerry, he would have
married a Jewish lady from Russia, and I would have an aunt in Boston.
I wrote back that I was the right John McCarthy and that I would
visit him the next time I go to Europe.
Sarah finished her Heathkit with only a little expert help
in adjusting the IF amplifiers, and it works quite well. She wants
to build another Heathkit if I want something built, and she has
dusted off that old Norelco Electronics Educational kit. I trust
you don't mind.
David Silver has arrived and is busy making an electronic
audio switch for us so everyone will be able to listen to as well
as watch the TV on his office console.
I have finally finished the proposal to the National Science
Foundation to do research aimed at home computer terminals. It is too
soon to know if they will give us money.
I covered too much ground too fast in my course this quarter,
and, as a result, am almost out of things to say. Oh well, I can
always let them work on their term papers.
I don't know if the new printer was working before you left,
but this is the kind of printing it does.
Unfortunately, it is still only possible to use one font at a time,
but maybe my next letter will be fancier.
